At least once a week in my career as a storage engineer I have a conversation that involves a systems admin asking me to add space to a SAN (fiber channel attached) based storage object by referring to it how they see it. This could be the name of a data store in VMware, saying the “E-drive”, or any number of other descriptions of a storage object which are meaningless to me. When I ask for more detail I am often given the world wide name of the device, as to them it looks like a pretty unique identifier for the storage they are talking about. Before I long I log into the system myself and get it all sorted out but I wanted to see if there was a way I could make a quick and easy translation of the world wide name they give me so that it […]
Introduction Recently I decided to quit smoking, for good. I have “quit” on many occasions for varying lengths of time using a number methods. My most successful attempt lasted for over three years, cold turkey. It seems, though, that the older I have gotten the more impossibly difficult it has become to quit. That, combined with the fact that many of my closest friends and family are smokers, has made my recent attempts to quit fail miserably, often only lasting a week or two. I have tried Chantix, the patch, the gum, the lozenges – everything. They all work the same way […]
When I was very young, some time around third grade, my teacher must have seen something in me. She requested that I have an I.Q. test administered. My parents didn’t tell me what I scored at the time, but I knew it had to be pretty good because I was immediately placed in a program my school had which was called the “gifted” program.
Over the years I have gained, and lost, many friends. I feel much of this might be due to my own attitude as I have been told that I can be difficult to be friends with. Part of it, though, is that I think many people do not know how to be a good friend, or what it means to be a friend to someone else.
After having just finished catching up on the TV show Lost in it’s entirity, I started to wonder: Will we ever see TV shows of such epic proportions ever again? Over the past several years television is more and more dominated by reality and game shows, and reason is simple: They are cheap to produce and get very high ratings.
